Engine Removal
Use lifting lugs to hook up chain, cable or lifting strap. Support transmission with jack so it doesn’t fall when engine is pulled free.
Teardown
Lift head straight up off block so it clears timing-chain guides. Set cylinder head aside, but be careful. Gasket surface of aluminum head is easily damaged.
Short Block Reconditioning
Reconditioning short block starts with removing all crud and gunk from block. Castiron block is lowered into hot tank for a good soaking in cleaning solution.
If you neglected to label electrical, fuel and vacuum connections on a fuel-injected 280ZX, you now know you blew it. However, all is not lost. Use diagram to trace and make connections correctly. Drawing courtesy Nissan.
Cylinder Head Reconditioning
Cam runout (bend) is checked by supporting cam at ends and rotating while checking inner bearing journals with dial indicator. V-blocks can be used to support cam. Here, I’ve removed all but end cam towers for check.
Engine Assembly
Putting it back together is the rewarding part of engine rebuilding. All dirty and tedious jobs are over. To help ensure everything goes right, be organized and keep things clean.
